Get Up! Stand Up! For Records!

Saturday, April 17th is International Record Store Day!

“ So…” I hear you iTunes/Amazon mp3 purchasing kiddies saying. So, if it wasn’t for record stores you wouldn’t be able to interact, in a physical way, with the music you are purchasing before you buy it.

“So…” I hear you purchasers of nonphysical formats saying. So…although the music may still be there (albeit in an inferior quality), you are missing out on physically interacting with other people who dig the same types of music that you do and you miss out on the packaging of the music. And although you may think that packaging isn’t important, tell that to the Who, the Rolling Stones, to Radiohead, to Wilco, and all the other bands that spend time to add meaning and value to the music through the physical release of music. Tell that to the people who are trying to build physical communities of music fans buy running indy record stores. Trust me, running a small record store isn’t about making money—it’s about music.

Maybe it’s time for us, as fans of music, to also focus on the music and the musicians who care about putting out interesting content.

So if you don't know where a local record store is located, go to the Record Store Day web site and look for one. Buy some vinyl...it does the heart good!

  1. I want to appreciate music better, and yeah I remember the days when I could put a cd in the player and just go through the whole cd. Over time I have gained a huge digital library and If i buy a Cd i would just put it in the computer and it goes onto my itunes and now my ipod has it. its so easy and I can enjoy the songs I want to hear. I can also find new artistes quickly and more efficiently with itunes and websites like pandora

but i miss the CD buying, I miss the covers and pulling out the book and reading the back storie and stuff, and i miss the substance of having it in my hand,

of corse, I wasnt around when there were records but I would love to buy vinal too.

It comes down to it its money. I want the music and i can get it cheaper on itunes. At least I am buying it rather than downloading it, but sometimes I feel like I am buying air...

I support the record stores but they always fall because i dont support the record stores... this is the problem :(

this comment has no point its just a comment.

  2. I love cd's. I think they are the best medium to listen to music through, other than live. You can bring them on the go, and listen in your car. You can pop them into a dvd player or receiver and send it through the tv, and any super speakers you might have. I recently bought a few tapes (Highway 61, Emotion Rescue, a Devo album, chili peppers first album, and some DIY album), and while I am excited to listen to them at home when I start driving, they are kind of for novelty.

The ipod (or mp3's for that matter) is the best and worst thing to happen to music. You can have all the music you want, right at your fingertips, but it gets lost way way way too easily.

    CD's. FOREVER.
